Sliema Travel Guide

At a Glance

The town's stunning seafront promenade is a focal point, lined with charming cafes, restaurants, and shops that offer breath taking views of Valletta, Malta's capital city, across the harbour.

Sliema's rocky beaches and lidos provide opportunities for relaxation and leisure plus there's plenty of water sports for those looking for a bit more action!

Its central location also makes Sliema an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of Malta, with excellent transport links connecting it to other parts of the island. Then, as the sun sets, Sliema's waterfront transforms into a lively hub of entertainment, making it a popular destination for nightlife.

Getting Around

Getting around Malta is easy, mainly due to the fact it's a small island but also because of the excellent bus services that serve all the major tourist areas and are inexpensive and efficient.

You can catch two buses to Valetta which is approximately a 20 minute journey. You can also get a bus from Sliema to the airport or the ferry terminal where you can catch the ferry to Gozo and Camino. If you're going to Gozo do visit Victoria, the capital and if you're going to Camino then follow everyone else as they usually are off to the Blue Lagoon! Once you're there you will see why, it's simply breathtaking.

You can also catch the ferry from Sliema to Valetta and it costs only 2.80 euros return!

Eating and Drinking

Eating out is a must as it gives you the chance to sample the delicious local food with influences from across the Mediterranean to North Africa that creates a unique fusion of tastes.

There are many restaurants in Sliema so almost any reasonable budget can be catered for. There are also numerous bars where you can enjoy a drink after lunch or dinner.

Things to See and Do

There's lots to see and do in and around Sliema and Malta itself. You can visit one of the beaches or Lido's to cool off or you can choose from one of the many activities on offer.

These include the Blue Lagoon boat tour where you can swim and snorkel in this little bit of paradise. If you do take a bus or ferry to Valetta it is well worth it. The Malta Experience is like a cinema where you take your seat and a film tells you all about the history of Malta. It gets really interesting when your seat starts shaking and tipping backwards and forwards! Great fun.

There is also a 'hop on hop off' sightseeing bus which is always worth doing, its relaxing and you get a lot of information about Malta. There are also two shopping centres that have various shops, both independent boutiques and better known international shops.

You can also go parasailing where you get to see Malta from a different view!

Nightlife

There are plenty of bars in Sliema of all types, they are very friendly with lively atmospheres. There aren't clubs as such, but if that's what you're looking for you are not far from St Julian's so head over there for clubs going on until dawn!

Events

There are many different events in Malta throughout the year, including folklore events, classical music events and recitals, parades celebrating Malta's history or the SummerDaze festival with bands and singers holding concerts across Malta in August.

Sliema has managed to maintain some of its original character and so locals celebrate their Patron Saint with a local Festa, or village feast. There are three of these each summer, one in July, August and September.

There also beer festivals and a festival for arts and crafts. You name it and there's probably a festival for it in Malta!
